The journal is owned by the Ferrata-Storti Foundation (non-profit foundation), and serves the scientific community following the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations on publication ethics policies for medical journals. One of the main purposes of the Ferrata Storti Foundation is to make the results of the most important studies on the subject of hematology available in the shortest possible time and at the lowest possible cost for the authors.

Haematologica is an Open Access Publication and everything published is immediately available for free to everyone. Furthermore, manuscripts are published online as Early view a few days after acceptance and are freely visible to all. Detailed information on Open Access can be found at the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) website.

When a manuscript is accepted for publication in Haematologica, the authors are invited to transfer the copyright to the Ferrata Storti Foundation, owner of Haematologica, under a Creative Commons license CC BY-NC. By doing so, the Ferrata Storti Foundation becomes the only body that can authorize commercial use of the published papers. The revenues from this activity contribute to keeping the publication charge of Haematologica much lower than that of most other open access hematology journals. However, when requested by authors, other types of copyright management are available (see Rights & Permissions). The review process of all the manuscripts submitted to Haematologica is rigorous and is carried out by highly qualified editors who make use of the judgments of independent reviewers with expertise on the subject of the submitted manuscripts.
